Governor Tim Walz has officially designated October as Dyslexia Awareness Month in Minnesota. The proclamation aims to bring attention to the importance of literacy instruction and acknowledge the challenges faced by students with dyslexia, who make up about one in five learners.

Representative Patricia Mueller (R-Austin) has been active at the state Capitol advocating for improvements in how reading is taught. She was instrumental in advancing the READ Act, which mandates that Minnesota schools adopt evidence-based reading instruction practices based on scientific research. The legislation seeks to provide all students, especially those with dyslexia or other reading difficulties, access to effective literacy education.

“Reading is the foundation for learning and the key to opportunity,” said Rep. Mueller. “When we fail to give children the tools to read, we hold them back from reaching their potential. Dyslexia Awareness Month is a reminder that with the right instruction, all students can learn to read and thrive.”

The READ Act reflects ongoing efforts within Minnesota's education system to address literacy challenges and support diverse learning needs across public schools.
