Winona Police Department issued the following announcement on Jan. 13.
Every fall we prepare our homes for winter. We pack up our boating supplies and bring out the skis and snowmobiles. We put the lawn mower away and get out the snow blower. But how many of us take the time during the winter to check on our boats stored in our yard and our lawn mowers stored in our sheds? Most of us probably don’t think to take a look at them other than to dream of warmer weather.
We would like to encourage everyone to take some time to check over your property and to review your own home security practices.- Did you remember to take all your fishing equipment out of your boat or did you leave it in there thinking no one would disturb it? Did you know many people have fishing equipment stolen in the winter after having left it in their boats? This includes batteries, trolling motors, and gas cans. - Do you have alley access to your property that you have not checked since it got cold?- Have you checked your garden shed to make sure your lawn mower or other small motor equipment is still there? Have you made sure all locks and windows are still intact?- Do you frequently leave your vehicle unlocked or parked in your garage with the keys in the cup holder? Did you know the majority of our stolen vehicles are from people who leave their keys in the car? - Do you lock the doors to your house when you are not home or when you go to bed? Locked doors should be one of the first lines of defense in your home.
We encourage everyone to do a mid-winter check on your property to make sure everything is where you left it. It is also a chance to move some things that may not have been stored in the most secure place to a safer place to ride out the remainder of the winter.
If you find anything missing, please call the non-emergency number at 507-457-6302 to make a report.
