Ten German police officers are visiting Winona this week as part of an exchange program with the Winona Police Department, Winona County Sheriff’s Office, and the New Ulm Police Department. The biennual exchange program with the Bersenbruck, Germany Police Department has been in place for over 30 years. Retired and current law enforcement officers from Winona will host the ten German officers while they are staying in Winona.
Mayor Scott Sherman, City Manager Chad Ubl, and Police Chief Tom Williams welcomed the delegation to the City with a luncheon at City Hall and an exchange of gifts on September 21. Following the welcome, the delegation visited the Law Enforcement Center, Winona Middle School, and Cotter High School to share information about living in Germany and being a police officer. The host families have planned a variety of activities for the delegation over the next few days including a riverboat excursion and a trip to a Vikings game before they return to Germany. A delegation from Winona and New Ulm plan to visit Bersenbruck, Germany in 2024.
