The Watershed Conservation Planning Initiative (WCPI) is set to help forests and streams survive and flourish, Winona Daily News reported.
One of the seven conservation planners hired was Dan Wermager of Root River Soil & Water Conservation District in Houston County. He also reached out to Jim Christenson, who was already on the hunt for methods to boost the area.
“We’re reaching out to a new demographic of landowners and getting more people involved in conservation,” Wermager said during an interview with Winona Daily News.
He has teamed up with farmers to help control erosion and other agriculture concerns. Now, the WCPI’s strategy takes into account conservation aspects like strengthening streambanks and forests.
Christenson, who oversees wildlife property in southeast Minnesota said his goal was to get rid of buckthorn from his land.
“I want to maintain it for wildlife, so we’ll always have a place to go and hunt or even to camp,” Christensen told Winona Daily News.
