Minnesota's unemployment numbers are declining as over 84,000 payroll jobs become available.
Unemployment numbers peaked in May at 9.9% and receded to 8.6% in June, according to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), CBS Minnesota reported.
The May figures were at their absolute highest levels recorded since 1976.
June saw 84,700 payroll jobs added, according to CBS. The largest figures were coming from the leisure and hospitality industries. These industries also had the largest job numbers in May.
DEED Commissioner Steve Grove weighed in on the numbers.
“Many Minnesotans who were laid off are beginning to return to work — which is a good sign. Yet our unemployment rate remains more than double what it was before the pandemic,” Grove told CBS Minnesota. “To continue to see positive trends in our economy, we need to continue to be safe as we reopen our economy to avoid the volatility we’re seeing in other states that are dialing back due to troubling COVID-19 outbreaks. That means wearing masks and practicing social distancing.”
