City of Canton issued the following announcement on Dec. 4.
We want to respond to recent inquiries regarding the dollar amounts associated with your monthly utility bills. Each month, you receive an invoice for your city services used during the previous month. An invoice is simply a bill. Its function is to elicit payment from a customer, and to indelibly record the transaction on the city's books. It spells out the details of thetransaction, the cost per unit, and the total cost and tax (if any) due. An invoice DOES NOT include your total account balance. So, if you have a credit on your account, that amount WILL NOT appear on your monthly invoice. Likewise, if you are delinquent with your payment, the total amount owed IS NOT reflected on an invoice. Currently, the system used to generate utility bills does not give us the option to include account balances. There are utility billing programs available that would offer this feature. However, they are quite costly to implement and operate. That said, it has become increasingly apparent many residents are unhappy with the current way of doing business and have expressed such to city hall. The city council will begin exploring billing software options in the new year. In the meantime, if you have questions/concerns about your utility account, please contact city hall. We will review your invoices and provide you with an account statement -- reflective of your current balance.
