Today, Congressman Brad Finstad, a member of the House Agriculture Committee, led six members of Congress in urging the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Risk Management Agency to review risk management tools for pork producers. The letter seeks a comprehensive evaluation and report on potential regulatory or legislative actions to enhance industry resilience against economic challenges.
The letter was signed by Reps. Randy Feenstra, Mike Flood, Michelle Fischbach, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Don Bacon, and Adrian Smith. It highlights pressures faced by pork producers such as high production costs and volatile markets. Additionally, diseases like Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome have impacted operations nationwide.
The lawmakers emphasize the importance of risk management for the financial health of U.S. hog farms and urge for changes that would make USDA-backed tools more accessible.
Rep. Finstad stated his commitment to ensuring effective risk management programs for farmers in his district. Todd Selvik from the Minnesota Pork Producers Association expressed appreciation for Finstad's leadership in seeking improvements for pig farmers' access to these tools.
