City Of Austin issued the following announcement on Nov. 30.
Public Service Announcement for residential remodeling to ensure the Grinch doesn’t steal your Christmas cheer.
Things to consider when hiring contractors:
1. Do they have a license for the scope of work they are performing? Most projects require a Licensed MN Residential Contractor and MN Residential Remodeler. If they are licensed, that means they are insured and the consumer is protected if a problem does arise. All trade licenses can be located on the Minnesota Department of Labor website, or by simply contacting the City of Austin Building Department.
2. If plumbing, electrical or mechanical work is in the scope of the project, these subcontractors are also required to be licensed (mechanical bonded).
3. Make sure your contractors are pulling permits. This ensures the work is inspected, compliant with MN State Codes and recorded for your records.
4. When receiving a proposal or bid, make sure it is formal, itemized and MOST IMPORTANTLY, IN WRITING! 5. Lastly, if you have any questions at all please call the City of Austin Building Department at 437-9950. We are here to help.
Things to consider if you are doing the work yourself in your own home.
1. Permits are still required.
2. MN Building Codes still apply.
3. Please contact the Building Department at 437-9950 with any questions.
