CITY OF BYRON: Byron’s Truth-in--Taxation Meeting is Dec. 8

Taxpic

City of Byron issued the following announcement on Nov. 22.

When you receive your property tax notice from the county this year, an increase in the city of Byron’s levy will be shown. That increase is derived from the preliminary levy proposed earlier this fall. However, at a later meeting, staff members brought forward a budget that didn’t require an increase to the levy. City council members then instructed staff members to move forward with a zero tax rate increase. The final levy will therefore be lower than the preliminary levy, explained City Administrator Mary Blair-Hoeft.

Property owners may still see an increase in taxes because of the increase in property values in the city.

If you have questions about the city of Byron’s levy, the annual Truth in Taxation meeting to discuss the levy is at 6 p.m., Dec. 8 at city hall. That is the place and time to voice your concerns to city council members. The group cannot impact the valuation of property in the city. They can change the levy.

Information about how to virtually attend the meeting will be posted in early December as the city is in the process of installing the necessary equipment to allow streaming of future meetings.

In the spring of each year, property tax statements are mailed to property owners and those statements list the value of the property. Property taxes are calculated using that value. Property owners may attend meetings in the spring and early summer through Olmsted County to question their property’s valuation.
