CITY OF CANTON: City Council Highlights

Interviewmedia

City of Canton issued the following announcement on July 9.

Here are some the actions taken by your city council during last night's regular monthly meeting.

* Two additional property owners will be issued citations for failure to voluntarily comply with nuisance ordinances. Current photos of both properties were reviewed, along with a timeline of correspondence from the City. The council unanimously agreed that the owners have been given several opportunities to address their respective ordinance violations.

* Approval was given for an inspection of the aged electrical system at the Mitson Museum, which is maintained by the City of Canton. The inspection cost is $500, which will be covered by budgeted funds.

* Mayor Johnson introduced a resolution condemning hate speech directed toward a City employee. The resolution states the City of Canton supports the efforts of City Clerk/Treasurer Brock Bergey to enforce the City nuisance ordinances at the city council's discretion. It also condemns the recent acts of City of Canton resident Jamie Knutson, in posting "what can only be classified as hate speech" on social media. The resolution emphasizes the council's desire to encourage and nurture a welcoming community where all residents, City employees, and visitors feel safe and welcomed. The mayor's resolution (2020-05) passed with full council support.

The next Canton City Council meeting is August 12 at 7 p.m. Approved council meeting minutes are posted on the City's website: https://cantonmn.com/city-government/.
