The City of Rochester could be refusing to pay for the construction of 10 blocks of North Broadway as the project could be over its estimated budget, according to Post Bulletin.
“It’s hard to say specifically why they were so much higher. We received a number of bids, and we were already beginning to see indication of potential economic impacts due to the ongoing pandemic," Rochester City Engineer Dillon Dombrovski said.
The city’s estimate is $14.2 million, and the least expensive bid is $19.5 million. Dombrovski guessed that the reason for the high amount is the city wanting to allow drivers to travel in both directions while the street is under construction.
Dombrovski said the city can’t afford to foot the bill, so the Rochester City Council is going to be asked to deny the contract and go for a new bid in the future.
“There could be an opportunity with the current state of emergency to acquire stimulus funding that may be available in the coming months. In the past, a stimulus package has looked for ‘shovel-ready’ projects, for which this project would meet that criteria and be a good candidate project to receive additional funds," Dombrovski said.
