D&O Community Corrections staff wore teal on April 7 to mark the Day of Action for Sexual Assault Awareness Month, as part of ongoing efforts to raise awareness about sexual violence and support victims and survivors. This April is the 25th anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, with Dodge and Olmsted counties continuing their work in prevention, support, and healing.
Sexual violence remains a significant issue across the United States. National findings indicate that more than half of women and nearly one-third of men experience contact sexual violence during their lifetimes. In most cases, perpetrators are known to the survivor, and sexual violence affects people from all backgrounds.
Dodge & Olmsted (D&O) Victim Services provides confidential support to survivors of sexual assault and other crimes, as well as their families. The organization helps individuals navigate legal processes, understand their rights, access counseling or financial assistance, and obtain protective orders when needed. Advocates also accompany survivors during medical exams or law enforcement interviews.
Throughout April, D&O Victim Services is partnering with Three Rivers Restorative Justice to host Community Building Restorative Circles. These events aim to educate community members about sexual violence and provide spaces for caregivers and survivors to connect. No registration is required for these circles.
Other events this month include an Olmsted County Circle on April 14 at the History Center; a Caregiver Circle on April 21 at Exchange Co-op; a Victim/Survivor Circle focused on healing through connection on April 29 at Christ United Methodist Church; and Denim Day on April 29 encouraging people to wear jeans in solidarity against victim blaming.
More information about services can be found by visiting the Dodge & Olmsted Victim Services webpage. Those needing immediate help are encouraged to call the confidential crisis line at 507-289-0636.
